Hey Y'all.

Times are a changing and Little Miss Moffat has taken a bit of a musical break lately, with shows being few and far between. Although check out the one on the 16th of December in Windsor, Ontario!

The Wilderbeats may be nominated for a 2006 ECMA in the Children's Category. We'll cross our fingers for that tip of the hat.

Also, there is a new Wilderbeats album in the works...even though the website is temporarily defunct. Lukas Pearse and Ashley are joining forces with the lovely and talented Benn Ross, Joyce Saunders and others to create a Halifax gem of wacky and wild nature tunes.

We are also hoping to include students from Park West Elementary School in Clayton Park as the backing vocals for the album. Until the new Wilderbeats website is up and running you can tune in here for updates.

Ashley has just received funding through Nova Scotia's Arts Smarts program to work with Sylvia Moore and her North Queens Elementary School students on a Species at Risk songwriting/movie project. This should be ground-breaking fun. Thanks Sylvia and Arts Smarts!

Frozen Lake

I walked across the frozen lake,
Soaked to the bone, with a chill that I can't shake.
The afternoon it took to give me this head start,
Left me time to look at the shape of our hearts.

You say 'wait, wait by the lake,
In the cabin light a fire.
I'm right behind, don't change your mind
I'll bring you everything you desire.'

How long will it be until you come around?
Sweep me off my feet when I hear the engine's sound.
And I wait wait, it's getting late,
I can't see where you are.
Oh oh oh, the ice and snow,
You promised you would bring my guitar.

Feel the floorboards rattling the beat,
Wind ghosts howling wisdom through the trees,
Patience came from necessity,
So wait for the one that you need.

Turn on the stove, ingite the stale propane,
That lingers in the lines like you Lover in your shame.
Watch the percolator boiling much to long,
We'll make excuses later, but I like my coffee strong.

And I say, 'Please, please, stay with me and I'll show you my devotion.'
You say, 'No no no. We must go and hide our love across a lake so frozen'.

Top Fifteen ECMA moments in Sydney, Nova Scotia

15. The way that waitress (all the others were amazing) at the Maple Leaf Lounge made Benn's request for a coffee seem like he was requesting she fly to Belize, get the beans, fly back, grind them with her teeth, and then find wood to light a fire and boil water that she got from a river to make him coffee.

14. Talking to Dave Ewenson late at the PGods show about ECMA politics and the music industry in general.

13. Drinking from Kasia Morrison's flask in the middle of a fancy restaurant in Sydney on Friday night. Yummy.

12. Seeing Claire and Moira at the ECMA Awards Gala, after thinking they had left that morning. They actually left Sydney and turned around to come back for the show! Now that is MRI dedication.

11. Being stood up by Jonathan Crouse for our Sunday morning live CKBW interview. I did it anyways on the cell. In his defense, it was not his fault.

10. Watching "Airport" at the Maple Leaf Lounge. A lovely band with the finesse of BA Johnston and the balls of The PGods. What a lovely place to watch a band of steel.

9. Benn and Joyce and I being mistaken for "The Cottars" by Lyle Petersen, Dave Ewenson, Laura Peek, Jess, and other drunken young rockers outside of the Maple Leaf Lounge...oh my, what a scene.

8. The sound at Al Tuck's set at 1:30 a.m. in the PEI room of the Cambridge Suites. If you were there, you know what I mean.

7. The Meat Pie rider at the Songwriter's Cafe. WTF? Meat Pie on a rider????

6. Watching Sloan's Chris Murphy stand in the Cambridge Suites hotel hallway talking to people for 3 hours straight. Folks, the man did not move. He just stood there bombarded by people who wanted to talk to him. I didn't want to.

5. The gorgeous flowers that I received from some lovely secret admirers! They also delivered flowers to the sensational Joel Plaskett.

4. Joyce and I signing autographs for cool kids after the Wilderbeats Show at the most beautiful Savoy Theatre in Glace Bay.

3. Driving Benn and Joyce and I through a blizzard with zero visibility to the Awards Gala Show and walking in our snow-covered parkas to hear the official announcement of Folk Album of the Year...awarded to the deserving Dave Gunning.

2. The free midnight breakfast that Claire, Moira and Jill and I stumbled upon in the hotel lobby with free champagne and O.J. AMAZING.

1. The Clansmen Hotel in North Sydney. Say No More.

Hey everybody,

Happy Holidays. I received a great gift in the mail yesterday from my buddy David Cieplinski. He is an amazing photographer and he sent me some great prints of the last Little Miss Moffat set at the Marquee Club. I will get them to Carly to put up on the website. Thanks DAVID!!!

I was invited to showcase at the 2005 East Coast Music Awards in Sydney, NS. The ECMA's are happening in February of 2005 and I am bringing the great Benn Ross and Lukas Pearse to back me up in the Songwriter's Cafe.

I will be headed back to Ontario for the holidays and will be playing two shows in Windsor, one of which is the great Modern Soul Christmas Party! Come one, come all.

September is a lovely month to be in the studio. We are presently at the infamous 'Mullet' putting some new Miss Moffat demos together. Mr. Plaskett is in the producer's chair and Mr. Austin is behind the massive controls. We are doing demos for a few new songs, namely "Heavy Clouds", "Search and Rescue", and "Whirligig". Thanks to Claire E Smith for the red wine and giggles, and thanks to Benn E Ross for the tight ass drumming.

Thursday, September 02, 2004

Greetings.

I will be opening for Julie Doiron in Hell's Kitchen, Halifax, on Thursday, September 16th. This is pretty exciting for me because Julie was a huge influence on my songwriting when I was in my earlier stages of Little Miss Moffat. Come on down and check out the show. Julie has a new album out called "Goodnight Nobody".

www.juliedoiron.com

After some deep contemplation, I have decided to keep living in a trailer the Nova Scotian backwoods this fall, instead of returning to Halifax. However, that does not mean I won't be around. With Grandma Moffat's 1991 T-Bird I will be fully mobile.

Joel and Charles and I are hitting the Mullet again to record demos in late September. "The Loyalist One", "Heavy Clouds", and "Search and Rescue" are some of the new material that we will be messing with.

Hey Everyone. Summer is flying by here in southwest Nova Scotia. My job at Kejimkujik National Park is so intense with hundreds of visiting campers to play for and interpret nature for. I have written several Park-related songs and have many Little Miss Moffat songs mulling around in the old brain. The latest c.d., Miss Canada is now available at selected Chapters Books Stores, as well as the Keji gift shop. Enjoy the sun everyone.

Little Miss Moffat albums are available in Canada at CD Plus, AVE Entertainment, Sam the Record Man, and other fine record stores. If they don't have them, please ask for them to order them in. As well, you can purchase the albums and individual songs at www.maplemusic.com

For locals in the southshore area of Nova Scotia, you can pick them up at CD Plus in the Bridgewater Mall.

Hey y'all,

I am writing from a staff trailer home in the middle of Kejimkujik National Park. Surrounded by 1970's wood panelling in a small room with bed that takes up 3/4 of my of the floorspace, I am still operating Little Miss Moffat. Who knew you could get internet in the middle of a Acadian Forest?

A Barred Owl called outside my window a few nights ago. It was loud and kinda scary. I called back, "Who Cooks for You?" and it flew away. I guess it liked the Joel Plaskett version of production better.

If anyone is visiting Nova Scotia this summer, be sure to come to Kedge on a Saturday night when I will be performing live at the Outdoor Theatre. I am a summer National Park Interpreter here and I incorporate music into nature/cultural Interpretation. This summer I will be playing songs like "The Grand Ole Osprey", and "The Jim Charles Song", and "Beaver Dam".

As well, a local filmmaker and I are applying for funding to shoot a video for the song "Streetcar Transfer". It will be shot in Toronto.

Well, I must get back to canoeing the lovely Kedge lakes.

Hey y'all,

Thanks to everyone who popped by Salvation last night to catch Matthew, Mark and myself with Brent and Benn. We are going to do a repeat of the Grimson/Moffat line-up at the Khyber on Thursday, April 29th. For anyone who has not caught Matthew Grimson, I beg you to come to this show. Matt is a songwriter strong and true. And for those of you who want to catch the same LMM show that Ontario caught this month with a back-up band I am forever grateful for (Benn Ross, Brent Randall, and Mark Bragg), please stop by.

It may be the last Little Miss Moffat show before I head off to Kejimkujik National Park for the summer.
